The Client Is Seen As A "Whole Person," Not Just A Diagnosis All patients are carefully evaluated to make sure that we aren't "missing" any significant or serious concerns. For example, you may come in to see Dr. Ferguson because of depression, but you will also be asked questions about anxiety, how work is going, and other issues. You are seen as a "whole person," so it's important to look at all your strengths and areas where you would like to see improvement.
Other times a full Diagnostic Assessment will be indicated, in order to answer specific questions about learning, Autism or Asperger's Syndrome, developmental delays, attention, or other issues. You will be given information up front about costs so that you can decide the best course of action.
Children and Teens
Often when children begin school (as early as preschool), it is the first time that you, teachers, or the child may begin to notice problems in attention, learning, mood, behavior, or friendships that is making it difficult to succeed in school or with peers. Maybe a teacher has suggested "testing," or perhaps you need documentation for private school entry. You might be concerned about ADHD, Autism or Asperger's Syndrome, learning disabilities, mood problems, out-of-control behavior, anxiety, or other concerns. Dr. Ferguson can help tailor the assessment to the child's needs, and Dr. Ferguson can work with the school (with your consent) to ensure that your child receives the help he or she needs.
Infants and Toddlers
If you have concerns about your infant or toddler's development, you might first talk to your pediatrician. Be open about your concerns, and ask if testing with a psychologist would be helpful. Dr. Ferguson is also available for a brief, free discussion of your concerns, to determine if her services are indicated. If your child is not meeting developmental milestones within the expected time frame, or if you suspect that he or she is developing very differently from same-age peers, then Dr. Ferguson can help you decide if a Diagnostic Assessment would be helpful. With many issues, particularly Autism and Asperger's Syndrome, it is important to get early intervention services, and Dr. Ferguson can help you access these resources. Adults
Getting an accurate diagnosis may provide you with the information you need to make the right treatment choices. Sometimes this can be accomplished with a solid clinical evaluation, which is done with every patient at their request. However, sometimes a full Diagnostic Assessment may be needed, especially if there are concerns of learning disabilities, attention problems, intellectual ability, Autism and Asperger's Syndrome, functional skills for daily living, mood disorders, significant anxiety, or impairments following traumatic brain injury or other issues.
